About SCARS

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) is dedicated to reducing the number of homeless animals in Northern Alberta, Canada

We believe that there is a suitable home for all homeless animals: young or old; large or small.

As a volunteer-run, registered charity, we care for these animals by providing veterinary care and foster homes for animals in need until a permanent home is found. These private foster homes provide the animals with warm shelter, food, exercise, and tender loving care (something that so many of the animals we receive have never experienced).

SCARS does not practice selective intake procedures and operates in a triage manner: taking the animal in most medical need first. As a result our medical expenses are enormous. Please consider donating to our rescue efforts.

Look At Us Now!

To date, SCARS has rescued and rehomed over 3,000 animals.

Because these animals live in our homes, we deveop a very deep bond with our fosters. Many of the adoptive families keep us updated on how well their new companions are thriving in their new homes.

To all the wonderful foster homes, all the tireless volunteers, all the compassionate furever-homes: we say a heartfelt thank-you!

Please support your local rescue society and consider adoption as opposed to buying your new friend.

Mattie (aka Lina)

I figured it was about time that I updated you all on how Mattie (aka Lina) is doing.

She has grown into the most beautiful girl with a sleek shiny black coat and beautiful brown eyes. We visit the dog parks here in Edmonton everyday and she loves to greet everyone, wailing with excitement when she sees people she knows. Mattie loves to chase balls and is learning to bring them back to me, especially if I have a yummy treat as a reward.

Mattie got spayed at 6 months and also go her rear dew claws removed she is a favorite at the vets – they all love her! She is wonderful playmate to Gyro and to the cats Sailor and Bella.

We went to play in the river on the weekend and she loved it. I am including pictures of her in the river and some taken tonight for you all to see how big she has grown and how well she is doing.

Thank you all for giving me the gift of Mattie.

I would love to know how her siblings are doing! **Jayne, Mattie, Gyro, and Sailor and Bella (the cats)

Linus & Ella (aka Sherlock & Lily)

Just wanted to give you all an update on Linus (formerly Sherlock) and Ella (formerly Lily). They are both doing well, getting along very well - no health problems, doing what normal puppies do. They both enjoy playing with other dogs at daycare and the many children that come into our home. They are very gentle and affectionate however Linus is quite protective and warns us of any strange people around the house. They are both high energy dogs and they seem to keep each other running for hours in our back yard - sometimes they get into the flower boxes but I guess thats what puppies do :-)
Most of the time Linus runs around with a stick and Ella chases him but Ella is quite good a pinning Linus. We have really been blessed by these two dogs and have recommended adoption from SCARs for some of our friends who are interested. I am attaching recent pictures of Linus, Ella and one of both of them. Please pass this on to Fran if possible. **Thanks,Rajeev & Naomi.

Kimby

Hello! My name’s Kimby, although sometimes my new mommy calls me Gizmo because she says I remind her of the cute little alien in Gremlins (I have one big ear that sticks straight up and another that flops over, so I think I’m much cuter!).

Although I love my foster family, my new forever home is pretty okay too! My sister Cassie is about my age and we play all day (except for walks and meals, of course). Here’s a photo of us on mommy’s bed (well, she thinks it’s her bed, but really it’s ours). She even gave us our own bedding because we like to chew it up so much.

Usually, I’m a perfect little angel, but sometimes mommy gets upset, like the time I watched her gardening and decided I could help by digging up the lawn or when I thought grandma’s glasses were for playing tug-of-war. Mommy likes it best when I just roll over for tummy rubs, and I have to admit I like that a lot too!

My sister is a rescue puppy just like me and we’re both so happy to have a loving home. We’re starting puppy classes next week; mommy says it’ll be fun, but I’m not so sure. Sometimes I shake a paw when she asks, but usually I don’t see the point! Cassie seems to enjoy performing her tricks, so maybe there’s something to it after all.

Anyway, it’s time to play again. Thanks so much to my foster family and the nice people at SCARS who helped me find my forever home!

Chinook

My name is Chinook and I am having so much fun in my new home. I am making my new family very proud because I graduated from obedience classes, and I help out with pulling the garbage out to the end of the driveway with the sled. I love other dogs and love playing agility. I never know what new trick my mom is going to teach me but it keeps me from chewing up my dads gloves!

Thank You SCARS for giving me a chance because I sure didn't like hearing all those gunshots out at the reserve. Woof Woof to all the other foster dogs and you all should try agility it is WAY TOO FUN! **Chinook

Josie (aka Tanya)

Well, I guess you could call it love at first sight because the first time I saw Josie I was smitten.
It was at Pet Expo and I was manning another booth down the way. Every time someone had Josie out, she caught my eye. She was about 4 months old.
I called home to make sure we all wanted another dog as we already owned two.
Everyone thought it was a good idea. Especially since we'd just lost our other big dog from a car accident a little over a year ago.
She was my first adopted dog from a shelter. All the other dogs we own have come straight from the home that didn't want them into our house.
Wow! my first dog that I get to pick out the name for. She was already named Tanya but we thought she was young enough to learn another one.
At first she was very shy around everyone. But oh so good!
She has such good manners and hasn't ruined anything. (Okay, other than masking tape rolls)
She was scared of men and didn't like to leave the house though. I guess she thought we might not bring her back if we took her out. Her favorite part of any trip for her is seeing home in the distance.
She likes to move stuff. It's not unusual to find your shoe or sock on the living room couch. I guess Josie has her own decorating ideas.
We decided to put her in doggie daycare twice a week so she'd get used to other people and dogs and mostly so she'd run around to exhaustion so she might actually sleep in.
It was quite a battle getting her to like even going for car rides let alone to get dropped off but now she blasts into the daycare like she owns the place. I think the first few days were harder on me. I'd call three times a day to make sure she was okay and didn't want to go home.
Unfortunately the sleeping in part didn't work out as well.
She sleeps with my daughter Brandy (the one in the pic with her) until she gets restless around 5:30am. Then Brandy gets up and lets her out so we adapted and cut a doggie door in the patio door screen that's in our bedroom. Now I'll wake up and there's Josie sleeping next to me with her legs all up in the air and her butt resting next to my pillow. Morning breath just doesn't seem so bad anymore.
Of course she has to see if the other dogs want to play before settling down so she has to take a swipe at them to see the reaction. No dog or human is really is interested in anything other than sleep at that hour so a few growls from all of us gets the message across.
A really cute habit she has is when you pet her, she will slowly put her head down, down, down, until she's turned upside down. Sometimes she even will do a summersault all the while she's gently biting at your wrist with the hugest grin on her face.
She housetrained very easily and picked up tricks quickly.
I call her my "mensa dog".
After receiving such a beautiful animal from a shelter I would recommend anyone who's looking for a pet, to get one from a shelter.
They may have their little quirks from the bad start that most of them had, but with lots of love and a little patience the reward back is tenfold. They are awesome animals!
The only thing I had to learn was to not baby her too much. I realized that I was preventing her normal development by shielding her from everything. Plus she was playing me. She'd act so scared of Craig when I was in the room, but when I wasn't around, she'd be curled up on the bed beside him. What an actress!
So that's just the first chapter of a long and happy life with our Josie bear!
Thank you so much for our wonderful dog! *Barb

Kunto (aka Sadie)

Here are a couple of pictures of Sadie to show you her new digs! She is getting along famously with Tofino (on the chair) and Jamaica (on the dishwasher) Lilac, the chow/akita cross no longer lives with us but they get to see each other regularly.

Her new name is Kunto and she responded to it right away. We go off leash every day and she is such a little athlete! Adopting her is the best decision I have ever made.

Thanks again for fostering her and let me know if you want to come and see her in person! Best, Anne

Lucy & Zoe (aka Kelly & Peg)

It has been 1 year since my family and I came to get Lucy (aka Kelly) and I wanted to let you know that she has come a long way. At first she was afraid of all humans especially males, she didn’t know how to walk on a leash, and would cower away when anyone got close to her. One year later and she has a new lease on life. She loves going for walks, can’t get enough treats and will come to you and lick your hand. We’re still working on playing fetch, but that’s coming. I think the best thing that helped her was Zoe (aka Peg). They are truly siblings in all sense of the word, they get along well, sleep together and even fight with one another. I’ve sent a picture of the two of them.

Take care, Angela

Sammy & Rosie

Just wanted to shamelessly brag about Sammy and Rosie :-)

We went to an APDT Rally obedience trial this weekend and the dogs cleaned up. They each got one round with a PERFECT score including the full points for the bonus exercise. They tied for High in Trial and High Rescue dog on Saturday. Rosie won High Rescue on Sunday and was only one point off of High in Trial. Pretty good for their first time in the obedience ring and with a rookie handler too!

Needless to say I'm a very proud of them. Both are shining examples of what wonderful dogs come through rescue. Sammy is truly the sweetest most gentle soul (although he sure doesn't sound like it when the door bell rings!) He has excelled at everything he has tried so far including obedience, sheep herding, pet therapy and agility. Rosie has been here only 6 months and is the heart of our household. She is a typical aussie in every way and keeps us laughing. She greets me every morning with a wiggling bum and something in her mouth to show me. She is an amazing competition dog and I don't think there is anything she doesn't LOVE doing together. She was awesome on sheep and is just starting in agility. She now has her Rally -o level 1 title. Sammy still needs one leg but of course already earned his CCGC title last fall (Canadian Canine Good Citizen).

I'll send a pic of them with their ribbons soon.

Thanks for all the hard work you do to give these wonderful dogs a second chance. Keep up the good work! *Heather

Jake (aka Big Jake)

I was on your site and thought I would let you know how well Jake is doing.

He is wonderful. He's an escape artist so he has to get tied in the yard but other then that he's a pleasure to have. He's getting older but he still acts young. He loves his walks and getting attention from anyone who will pet him.

Here's a pic of him and his biggest fan. (my son Bram) Jake lets him crawl all over him and all he does is lick his face. Once in awhile we have to watch him when his arthritis acts up but that's about all. I just got Jake shaved all the way down and what a difference.... He looks so young. He likes it cause it keeps him cool and I like it cause not as much hair. The thing is his underbelly and legs are almost all grey.

Thanks again for giving us a wonderful dog. Grace, Stefan, Bram, Bree and Jake

Echo

Just thought I would let you know that so far Echo is doing great. She is a VERY good dog so far. It will be three weeks this Tusday that we had her. All I can say is she's a doll. She listens real well and follows basic commands. The only time she go's to the bathroom is when we take her for walks. I think she only went twice in the yard. Between me and my daughter she is getting spoilt.Anyway I just thought I would tell you a bit about how Echo was doing...

Yours Truly.. Phil

Cuddles

We thought it was time for an update on Cuddles, a name that is very well deserved, but one I would not have chosen.

Cuddles came to SCARS after spending a year at the Fort McMurray spca to come here and spend another year with SCARS. I can not imagine how a dog with so much energy and spunk could spend so much time behind bars.

I began to foster Cuddles and soon discovered why people may have been turned off by this sweet girl. Lets just say she acted like a crazy girl when she was in her run. We always liked Cuddles and knew she had a “personality”. We only decided to adopt her after our old dog became very ill and passed away of cancer, and though we could never replace her, Cuddles seemed to fit in with us and our other 4 dogs and even the three cats.

We love her to pieces and I don’t think a day goes by that she does not make us laugh out loud. *Sylvia

Beau

Hi everybody, Beau here!
Just wanted to let all of you know that I am settled into my "forever home", and man oh man, I am lovin' it. My Aunt Yvonne picked me up from my Foster Mom's house, and took me to the Airport.
I got to ride on an airplane to get to my new Mom. My new Auntie Wendy brought me, and once the plane took off, they let me out of my carrier so I could give lots of licks and cuddles to the other people on the plane. My Mom and my new Sister Lucky were waiting for me at the airport. Lucky is a big black lab/ border collie X and she said that she came from a shelter too. She told me lots of things about my new home and my Mom the first night, after my Mom was asleep. She thought we were sleeping too ! Ha !
There are lots of lakes around here, and we go to one of them every day. lucky swims way out to get the ball, I don't understand it really, I have waded out to my chest a couple of time,s but the water is cold, and who wants to chase a stupid ball when there are so many more interesting things in the woods, and around the rocks? We have gone a couple of times to a doggie "off leash" park, where there are all kinds of other dogs running around while their owners follow them. I like to stay fairly close to my Mom and Lucky, I do a bit of exploring on my own, but when Mom calls I run as fast as I can to go back to her side. Her friends say I am "gorgeous", not sure what that means, but I think it is a good thing, cause they hug me real tight and pet me lots. My tail has not stopped wagging since I came!

Love, Beau.
Ps- lots of kisses to my Foster Mom Janice and the kids
.

Janey Lee & Scooby Doo

1st is Scooby Doo (aka Homer or Copper)
Mommy and Daddy changed my name when they got me because they say it suites me as I am a little silly and LOVE to eat treats, food (of any kind) and always get into trouble…not on purpose of course J. I was adopted just before Christmas of last year and it has taken this long to write to you! I am a very happy and friendly boy. I especially love my nieces and nephews, I almost vibrate when they come over and Mommy has to hold me so I don’t bowl them over with excitement. I have been to school and don’t usually jump on people anymore…but sometimes it is just so hard to do as I love them soooo much. Speaking of love, I love my Mommy and Daddy and my sister Janey (sometimes). I am a very good little brother and tell on her whenever she is doing something naughty, if at first they don’t hear me I just cry louder and louder….I don’t know what they would do without me! My parents love me dearly and think that I am the bestest boy in the whole world!. I am now 8 months old, but I have really grown into a big boy, about 80 – 90 lbs and very long…just can’t seem to stop eating!!! My nick name is “big nose” cause it is a tad long and I love sticking it were it doesn’t belong….don’t you just love me!! My favourite thing to do is to go for a walk either on my leash or at the off leash park where I can run and play with all my friends!

2nd is sweet Janey Lee (aka Janey)
Mommy and Daddy thought Scooby needed a sweet, shy and timid little sister to play with….boy oh boy did I have them snowed! I am doing well and rule the roost!!! I have my “special” spot in every room and good luck moving me once I have settled. Mommy says that if I could crawl into her skin I still wouldn’t be close enough and I adore my tummy being rubbed….actually, just touch me anywhere and I am happy as a lark!! I go for walks all the time and am a very good girl on or off my leash and always come when I am called…okay, okay…. I sometimes like chasing the odd bird or two and seem to go deaf at that point…but eventually I come back because I love to hear my two favourite words “Good Girl”. It’s all I need. I was a little leery about kids at first, but now I love them and am very good…not like Scooby…. I just wait to be pet and sneak in a few sloppy kisses once and awhile. My nick name is “Reindeer” because when I run I do a little double hop and look like I am trying to fly into the air…its very cute if I do say so myself! I am working on trying not to jump up on Mommy and Daddy, as well as letting my brother Scooby have a couple of pets without interfering, but find this a little difficult at times. I LOVE chewing and digging. I have made my mark in my new back yard by eating all the latis around the patio….Daddy had to make a new railing, but really it was a blessing in disguise as it looks much better now anyway J. My favourite thing is being pet and going to the park to run free, although going in the car to get there still makes me very nervous, but I am trying to be brave.

Thank you to all the people who cared for us when no one else would. Special thanks to the wondering Spruce Grove Vet Clinic who made us feel at home and helped us not to be so scared.

Tikka (aka Ezra)

You may remember me as EZRA. Here is my storey.
Back in October of 2004 when I was 7 weeks old I was rescued by the wonderful people of SCARS with my brothers and sisters. Well in that same month I was adopted by a wonderful couple named Pete and Dawn and they changed my name to TIKKA.

I get all the chewies and toys I can handle, designer collar, good neck scratches, car rides, Frisbee throwing, lots of attention and lots of love. I have graduated from level 1 & 2 obedience at the top of my class, I have completed my second level of agility and this spring I am taking retriever training.
All these accomplishments and I am not even 2 years old yet! But I am not here to brag… I am here to say thank-you to everyone from SCARS and to acknowledge all the time and effort they put into us pooches. My parents would also like to say a big gigantic thank-you because if not for you, they would not have such a good looking and talented dog! Ok I added that last part in…. But seriously, they really want you to know that they are very happy to have found me.

Love, Tikka

Scottie

Hi Guys! It's me....Scottie! Just wanted to let you know that I'm doin' grrrrrreeeaaattt! I love my new family and they love me too. I get to go for lots of walks and car rides and my mom even takes me to work with her. I love all the people there, and some of those ladies smell really nice and when they hug me I smell nice too! My dad gets me up some mornings and says "Hello Son!" (I think he's glad to have another man around the house since he's surrounded by girls) My mom loves me so much she brought home another dog to play with. Her name is "Journey" and she's the sweetest. I don't get to keep her though cuz she is looking for a family of her own and hopefully someone will adopt her soon and love her as much as we do. I even got to baby-sit "Smudge" for a couple of days and took really good care of her. By the time she left, she was covered in my slobber just to show her how much I cared! My human sisters think I'm the greatest. I get to wake them up in the morning, and snuggle with them at night in their beds. And when they jump on the trampoline it makes me so happy I just want to get up there and jump with them. Seriously folks, I'm happy happy HAPPY! Thank you all for taking such good care of me at SCARS. I've known some of you since I was a baby (well I'm only 8 months now...) and probably wouldn't be half the man I am today if it wasn't for some of you! Too bad no one ever taught me how to drink from a bowl without spreading water over the entire house!!!
With love & lots of licks! Scottie

Fred (aka Bourbon)

Hello,

We adopted Fred "Bourbon" of Border Collie Brandy's litter in April 2005. He's having a great time living in Edmonton. Although he got a little bigger than we anticipated (he mostly takes after his daddy who was almost definitely an Akita), we have a lot of fun at the dog park, the lake and in the fields. Doggie pic is Fred about a month after we got him. Little Fred is on Fred's 1rst B-Day, he's 120lbs!
Thanks so much for all of your hard work. We tell all of our friends and anyone who is interested about you. Happy Easter, Gillis and Dino

Logan

It's me again. Logan!

I wanted to tell you what I've learned so far. 1: I can sit now (it was hard to learn but my Mommy is stubborn) 2: Don't chase my cat brothers (They get scared and scratch) 3: I can get a bite of chicken if I sit and wait for it and don't try to take it (Mommy's really a softie) 4: Don't chew Mommy's lotion bottle (Mommy has to pick every thing up and put it away before bed or I'll be bad) Don't all Mommies know that if they leave it out, it's fair game? I got a few pictures taken so if you'd like to take one from them and tell every one how much I've learned that would be a howl. Oh, and did you know I howl? Really good too! Mommy just looks at me with wonder in her eyes as to who/what I am and where I came from. I'm gaining weight too and don't look so scrawny any more. Got to go... Mommy's taking me for a ride again today, so wish me/her luck that I get in the car. Take care, Logan

Aris

Hi, I adopted Aris in July of this summer after my 11 year old companion dog Bud passed away. It was pretty traumatic and Aris helped me make the transition easier. Here is a picture of her now (November) in her new home, happy and healthy.

*Lydia, Happy SCARS adoptee recipient

Oakley

Thank you for our "wonderful" dog Oakley.
We love him even though he chews up anything he can! We've moved to a acreage now and he has lots of room to run around. We have to keep a close eye on him somtimes because he almost ran away but he has learned his lesson. He's met some new friends and insists on going to Newts house when we go away but oh well. So thank you again for giving him a second chance.

Jackson

Here is a picture of Jackson at about 5 months of age. We got him at the end of September from Second Chance. He’s now 9 months and 90 pounds and is a very handsome dog. As he was one of the runts of the litter, I’m just wondering how big the other puppies have become and would be interested in hearing of his brothers and sisters (I think there were 11 and they came from the Enoch Reserve). I go onto your website in hopes of seeing some of them, but haven’t yet. He loves everyone, especially pretty young girls, and is a guy’s guy, a man’s man. He has re-landscaped our backyard and enjoys shrubs and small trees. Well, he’ll eat just about anything. He has a very calm temperament, though, and is on the whole very well behaved. He has been a great, if bigger than expected, addition to the family. Thanks so much for the work you do at Second Chance. My boys are happy to finally have a‘real’dog. *Diane

Puck

My name is Puck –I’m named after the trickster in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (sorry, hockey fans). My new family says it suits me just fine. Of course, Mom does get a few strange looks when she shouts my name at the park.

My new family met me at one of the adoption days held at Petsmart. They were fostering other puppies. Mom saw me and immediately new that my Dad was going to love me -she was right. And though they had agreed not to adopt a puppy at this time in their lives-Mom was 9 months pregnant - I stole their hearts.

I could play catch within a few days, walk well on and off leash and followed them both around EVERYWHERE. I even lie on the bathmat while Mom has a shower. But I am a puppy. I love to take shoes, socks and underwear and parade them past you. I love my squeaking toys and anything outside that I think is for chewing…wood from the wood pile, rocks, chewing gum from the playground. My favorite activity is gardening. I’m really talented at digging 3 feet holes in the backyard flower gardens.

But my best toy is the new baby. He is as small as my squeaky toys and makes the same sound. But don’t you worry-I haven’t eaten him yet. I just lick him silly! He seems to like it. I can’t wait until he is bigger and can play. We’re going to be best friends.

P.S. Little Jackson asked me to say “thank you SCARS” for his birthday present (I think he means me!)

Hugo (aka Ridgely)

Guess it is as good a time as any to send an update on Hugo (a.k.a Ridgely), Stella (a.k.a Dotty) too while we are at it.

Stella and Hugo just love each other, as you can see from the photo Hugo is her little shadow and who can blame him, she is still the most gorgeous. Hugo is so handsome, just look at those ears. Hugo is 4
months now and Stella is 10 months and just last weekend had their first trip to Grandma & Grandpa's cabin at the lake. They were crashing through cattails for 6 hours and only paused on occasion to try out their swimming skills...let's just say they need practice.

Hugo will be going for puppy obedience soon and Stella is going to try out flyball! We expect they will excel at both. They are doing wonderfully and love to help with the gardening (eating the flowers) and are always willing to help dig a hole whether asked to or not, usually not!

Thank you again for helping us find our puppies!

Pauline & Rob.

Jasper (aka Monkey)

I wanted to say hi and let you know that I’m doing well! My name was formerly Monkey, but my new name is Jasper (for my mom and dad’s favourite park). I love to run, run, run and jump and climb and fetch, and my mom tells me that we will be going to agility classes in January to try to use up some of my energy! I’m fearless and I LOVE people and other dogs. I have been doing very well with my housetraining and have just graduated from puppy classes. My favourite trick is a “high five!”

I am teething right now, so am a little chompy, but have been very good and haven’t chewed up too many things that I’m not supposed to.

My new best friend’s name is Levi – he is a Golden Lab and is only two weeks older than I am. We like to go to the dog park together and we like to wrestle and play. He is much bigger than I am, but I’m faster!

My mom and dad would like to say thanks to SCARS for rescuing my mom and my brothers and sisters and I. They are so glad they were able to adopt me!

Merry Christmas! Love Jasper

Leyla (aka June)

It's me Leyla (a.k.a. June). I wanted to let you know that I am doing very well and have settled into my new home. I couldn't be happier! I have tons of toys all over the house to play with, and I even have a furry feline sister named Keetsya to chase around. She seems to like me and lets me lick her ears and chase her throughout the house, although she sometimes chases me?! What's up with that??? I have learned to sit, shake a paw and lie down…mind you I will do whatever it takes to get those yummy treats!!! I want to send a big thank you to Aunty Lorraine, who was my Foster Mommy before I found my forever home. I miss her lots but know that I will stay in touch with her. Jamie has also been a big fan of mine, so thank you Jamie for caring about me! My Mommy and Daddy hug and squeeze me lots and tell me that they love me. I think it is a win-win situation for us all. Life couldn't be better! SCARS, thanks for rescuing me when you did. We will all be forever grateful. Keep on saving other lives and take comfort knowing that you are making a difference in this world.

Love and gratitude,
Leyla and the Family

Snoop (aka Chi Chi)

I am the happy owner of one of your dogs. She is the best thing that ever happened to our family. I just wanted to let you know my feelings on your trip to Pet Smart on the west end of Edmonton. It seemed to me a huge success (of course I am on the outside looking in) and I would encourage you to do more of it, to get more of those poor animals a good home. Good luck to you all and I greatly admire what you are doing.

Wednesday, 10 May 2006

Chance (aka Cicero)

I wanted to write to you so I could fill you in on all the new exciting things that have been happening in my life, and to thank you once again for taking such great care of me and making my stay with you so enjoyable.

I love my new home and family, especially my big brother Codin. Even though he may not show it all the time, I know he loves me to pieces and he takes very good care of me. He has taught me lots of new tricks, like how to catch a ball and bring it back, how to shake a paw, and how to eat snow.

I also love my grandparents; they treat me so well (I’m a very spoiled boy.) My grandpa likes to feed me pieces of bacon when he thinks grandma isn’t looking, and grandma always has something for me to play with. I love going for walks with my grandpa, we always have fun splashing in puddles and making a big mess.

On Monday I had my first bath; it was not as fun as Bryn promised me it would be, but my aunty Berde from Denmark made sure I got dried off good, and then she even let me fall asleep with her on the fancy leather furniture. She spoils me so much; she even bought me a fancy bed to sleep in with a beautiful sheep’s skin. It keeps me very warm.

I’m sure you’ll be happy to know that I am growing like a weed; I’ve gained four pounds since I moved in with my new family. I hope you’re all doing well without me. *Chance
P.S. I have had my 1st set of shots and was NOT impressed. My people tell everybody I am a “Drama Queen”!

Tia (aka Mariah)

Thank you so much again for allowing me to adopt Tia (aka Mariah – Scout and Phoenix’s sister). She is healthy and doing very well. She is learning lots and loves attention. Everyone is amazed about how cute she is and how smart she is – looks and brains. I can’t go for a run without at least 5 people stopping me to ask about her and pet her. Anyways, here are some pictures of her. Picture015 was taken on the day we picked her up and the other 3 were taken just today – she likes to smile with her tongue hanging out - hahaha. I hope you like the pictures.

Thanks so much again, she is such a wonderful puppy. She brings smiles to everyone she meets! Jennifer

Malcolm (aka Collar)

Here is a little update on our beloved Malcolm (aka Collar). He started 2 weeks ago an attempt on playing which in his case means rolling in the grass, running around like the wind and plopping on hisback with all four up in the air. It's absolutely hilarious!!!!! He also started to sing.... whenever we squeak his plush toy he lays his head back andhowls......... Everyone we meet on our walks comes up to us and asks about him. They think is is soooo adorable. You guys just wait a little and we will look for a companion for our little wuffel.

Love, Manuela and Markus

Hunter

HI my name is Hunter. I have been in my new home now for about a week. Boy oh boy have I been busy! I didn't like my first car ride too much, I got sick. I think it was cuz I missed my brothers and sisters and especially mom, Nicky.

I just want you all to know I am doing great! I love it here. We go for long walks every night. There is this really cool lake by my house that I love to jump into... I think I scared my new mommy when I did it the first time. I love the water so much that I try to jump in the shower. I had to have my first bath when I got home cuz I got dirty after I got sick, so I dunno what the big deal is!
I have learnt how to sit pretty for treats and starting to ask to go outside for pee and poop breaks. I am still not too sure what to think of the big backyard. I like to have company out there and let my new mom and dad know when I have had enough.... I think the neighbours hear me too...oh well. I have lots of new toys and we play with them so much that I just get plain tuckered out!! Mom lets me curl up with her on the couch and we have some snuggle time before bed. I have my own bed that I sleep in and I could sleep all night if it wasn't for those darn pee breaks. Dad says I am doing REALLY good sleeping in my own BIG BOY bed... he says it's cuz mom hogs most of the bed already anyway.
They have taken lots of pictures of me. I have been to visit some new friends both people (big and little) and other four legged ones, we get along GREAT! More love for me! I also like playing with LUCKY... He is a golden lab/husky cross that comes to visit lots. I guess he is friends with my new family.
The vet says I am going to be a big boy, I already weight 13 1/2 lbs and am 14" tall @ 9 1/2 weeks old.
I gotta go cuz it is almost time for my walk.
I want to say hi to my mom and my brothers and sisters.....I miss you. I hope you are as happy as I am. Maybe we will run into each other some day!
And one more thing....a HUGE thank you to Maria for taking such good care of me, I miss you and won't forget you. Maybe you can visit, I'll check with mom first so she can clean up my toys for company.
LOVE and kisses,
HUNTER....oh yeah and Melissa and Todd say HI too.

Sly

It has been about three months since we adopted Sly from Jan. I just wanted to email another update and let you know how he is doing…aside from tearing everything he can get into his mouth apart, he is wonderful. We moved out to an acreage so he has a companion and lots of room to run and play. (which he absolutely loves, especially when he escapes) He has grown a bit since we got him, but still a little teddy bear. He did have a bit of a run in with a porcupine, but luckily he only got one quill (through the tongue somehow) We had the vet fix him up right away though. Everyone we've come across absolutely adores him.
Again thank you.

Mikey (aka Mr. Furley)

Hi there Folks
This is the Farmyard and we would like to express our very sincere thanks for our very special addition to our Furry Family. As you can see Mikey aka "Mr. Furley" is enjoying his new home. He is the "beauty" and our Bullterrier (Gaby) is the "beast" :-) We are so grateful that things have worked out so well - Mikey has a wonderful soft nature and is gentle with our cats. We look forward to getting "old" with our cherished Farmyard.
Thank you for all the work you do and I do advertise SCARS where ever I go. Mikey is an excellent ambassador!
Woof thank, Heather & Trevor

Charlie (aka Good Boy)

Hi Guys it's Charlie here.....I'm coming up to the 6 month mark, and the dreaded vet visit. But good news! Our vet has laser surgery now and it'll be a cinch. He also agrees that I don't much resemble a cock-a-poo like my Mom and assumes I must look like my Dad. I've got a real terrier look to my snout, and a sense of smell to match. Oh and the people here tease and call me "charles" cuz I look so mature already with my white beard. I've really grown to love my people and would be lost without my best pal Lacey. I will sit and shake a paw now, we are working on stay. Thanks to all the fabulous volunteers at SCARS and in my case a big wet kiss to Cheryl at Little Arf' N' Annie for finding me a forever home with both a little boy to take care of and a mothering shelty to take care of me. *Charlie & The Family

Scout

Hi everyone!

I just got back from my first run at the lake. I played fetchand rolled in the mud. I was so tired out that I hardly made it back to the car! It was SO much fun, I got to be off of my leash and even play withanother dog.

Amiga (aka Sugar)

We were thrilled to adopt "Sugar" in September 2005 (with many thanks to SCARS and Cheryl at Little Arf'n’ Annie - her Foster mom). We have had her now for 6 months, and count our blessings daily for the love and joy she has brought to our lives. She has adjusted very well to her new home (as you can see in the attached photo). She loves her daily walks (and evening rabbit hunts) and looks forward to weekend jaunts at the off leash park..... We changed her name to Amiga (Spanish for "little friend") and are having a great time playing and relaxing with her.....thanks so much!!!

Annie

My name is Annie, i kept my name when i was adopted by my mommy. I was adopted December 8 2005. My mommy and me have been so busy since i came to my new home that i forgot to write. I love my home and my mommy, she's very good to me. My sister was Allie and she got adopted before me, now i have a new sister her name is zoe and she is the golden retriever in my pictures.
My sister and me are the best of friends and we play all day long. I came to SCARS with my sister Allie, we followed a lady home when we were about 6 weeks old and she brought us to SCARS. My sister and I were supposed to be fostered by a family but my sister got adopted, so it was just me that went.

My foster family was very nice to me and i had many other dogs to play with. One night my mommy came over to their house because she knew the family and she saw me and fell in love with me because i was just so darn cute. I was only at my foster home for one week then i went to my new home. My grandma and grandpa love me very much, just as much as my mommy does. i am a lot bigger than i used to be, i used to weigh about 8 pounds and i am now 30 pounds at 5 months old. My mommy takes me to the dog parks to run around and play and she also takes me out to the lake to run free all over the place. well i have to run now its about supper time, i'll write again sometime soon. Love Annie

Sadi

Just want you to know Sadi is doing just fine.

Was trying to take a picture but they play so much I can't get one.

So here it is. Rest Period. Morley in front. Sadi at the back.

They are alive just taking a break....
Thanks Elaine

Indy (aka Crystal )

I wanted to send a couple pics of Indy (aka Crystal). She is doing very well and has come a long way! She is still very timid but is getting better. She is starting to play well at the off-leash area and just adores our other dog Peyton. She had some issues with separation anxiety at first but seems to be getting over that slowly but surely. I was looking on the website today and noticed that one of her babies is back. We would love to come out and visit with you and have Indy see her baby if she's still around Anyway, should run. I will keep in touch. Luv, Tanis, Corey, Peyton and Indy

Murdoch (aka Ernie)

Just some pictures of Murdoch, we have had him for about 3 months and we just love him!!!!! He goes to the local dog run and/or a walk everyday (most days twice), Murdoch has about 15 to 20 dogs he plays with and one cat.
Thank you for him

Linus (aka Sherlock)

Naomi and I are enjoying our dog who's name we changed to Linus. He is doing really well... no health problems, well behaved, excellently house broken... he is one of the best at his obedience classes. He is right now at dog daycare having fun with some of his friends. He is a great addition to our family and we have lots of fun (and exercise). I am sending a picture of him
in the last few months.

Thank You & Have a nice day,Rajeev.

Jenny (aka Sassy)

I just thought I would give you a quick update on Jenny. She joined our family a year ago when she was about 6 months old. Her first few days with us were quite mellow as she was still recovering from being spayed. After she was feeling better, she quickly learned her housetraining and enjoyed playing with our kids, who were 2 and 3 at the time.

Although she is an extremely loving dog, she is very timid of anyone who is not part of her family. We believe this is due to her lack of socialization at the start of her life. We got some private, one-on one training for her to help her overcome her fears of everything unfamiliar. She has made great strides and is truly a wonderful pet and companion.

She is well loved and we are so glad that she is a part of our family. We were a bit surprised at Jenny's change of personality once we got her home too, but considering her terrible early experiences, it was quite understandable. She has really come a long way since we first brought her home. Even though we got her some private training, she will never be an outgoing, trusting dog with unfamiliar people, but when she is with her family and in her comfort zone, she is the most loving, affectionate, happy dog. She walks great on a leash, although she doesn't need one as she never leaves our side. When we first took her to the off-leash areas, she was very nervous of all the other people and dogs, but she is becoming more and more confident each time we go, and will even let strangers come within 5 feet of her. (This is a HUGE improvement. She used to run in the bush when a stranger would approach, and come out only after they had passed us). When I first started taking her for walks, the street traffic would stress her out, and anyone approaching on the sidewalk would send her into a panic. She is still very cautious of others while on our walks, but will not bolt off the sidewalk and take all of the leash to avoid them now. Small steps, but they all add up.

She is quite funny with her treats too. It has only been in the last few months that she does not go and stash them somewhere as soon as she gets them. She has been known to keep/play with a milk bone treat for 2 days before eating it. She will smell it and lick it, and savor it for a good day before deciding to eat it. She's smart as a whip too. I can ask her to go find her "treat", "biscuit" or "pig's ear" and she will know exactly which one I'm asking for, and go retrieve it from her one of her many hiding spots!

She really is quick learner and is very eager to please. I am hoping to get her involved in agility training or flyball in a year or two, if I can find the time. I'm sure she will really enjoy it, and I think it will help her a lot with her socialization.

We have a cat also, and they play chase all the time. LOL The cat pretends to not like it, but half the time she will start the fun. My sister has a little Yorkie/Pom cross, and they are the best of friends, so she gets to play frequently with another dog too :-)

Listen to me..... going on an on like a new Mom! LOL We all love her very much and couldn't imagine our family without her. I would also like to say "thank you" for working so hard for such a wonderful rescue organization. I have told everyone I know about SCARS and encourage them to adopt from you folks. Sincerely, Stephanie.
