About SCARS

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) is dedicated to reducing the number of homeless animals in Northern Alberta, Canada

We believe that there is a suitable home for all homeless animals: young or old; large or small.

As a volunteer-run, registered charity, we care for these animals by providing veterinary care and foster homes for animals in need until a permanent home is found. These private foster homes provide the animals with warm shelter, food, exercise, and tender loving care (something that so many of the animals we receive have never experienced).

SCARS does not practice selective intake procedures and operates in a triage manner: taking the animal in most medical need first. As a result our medical expenses are enormous. Please consider donating to our rescue efforts.

Look At Us Now!

To date, SCARS has rescued and rehomed over 3,000 animals.

Because these animals live in our homes, we deveop a very deep bond with our fosters. Many of the adoptive families keep us updated on how well their new companions are thriving in their new homes.

To all the wonderful foster homes, all the tireless volunteers, all the compassionate furever-homes: we say a heartfelt thank-you!

Please support your local rescue society and consider adoption as opposed to buying your new friend.

Tikka (aka Ezra)

You may remember me as EZRA. Here is my storey.
Back in October of 2004 when I was 7 weeks old I was rescued by the wonderful people of SCARS with my brothers and sisters. Well in that same month I was adopted by a wonderful couple named Pete and Dawn and they changed my name to TIKKA.

I get all the chewies and toys I can handle, designer collar, good neck scratches, car rides, Frisbee throwing, lots of attention and lots of love. I have graduated from level 1 & 2 obedience at the top of my class, I have completed my second level of agility and this spring I am taking retriever training.
All these accomplishments and I am not even 2 years old yet! But I am not here to brag… I am here to say thank-you to everyone from SCARS and to acknowledge all the time and effort they put into us pooches. My parents would also like to say a big gigantic thank-you because if not for you, they would not have such a good looking and talented dog! Ok I added that last part in…. But seriously, they really want you to know that they are very happy to have found me.

Love, Tikka

Scottie

Hi Guys! It's me....Scottie! Just wanted to let you know that I'm doin' grrrrrreeeaaattt! I love my new family and they love me too. I get to go for lots of walks and car rides and my mom even takes me to work with her. I love all the people there, and some of those ladies smell really nice and when they hug me I smell nice too! My dad gets me up some mornings and says "Hello Son!" (I think he's glad to have another man around the house since he's surrounded by girls) My mom loves me so much she brought home another dog to play with. Her name is "Journey" and she's the sweetest. I don't get to keep her though cuz she is looking for a family of her own and hopefully someone will adopt her soon and love her as much as we do. I even got to baby-sit "Smudge" for a couple of days and took really good care of her. By the time she left, she was covered in my slobber just to show her how much I cared! My human sisters think I'm the greatest. I get to wake them up in the morning, and snuggle with them at night in their beds. And when they jump on the trampoline it makes me so happy I just want to get up there and jump with them. Seriously folks, I'm happy happy HAPPY! Thank you all for taking such good care of me at SCARS. I've known some of you since I was a baby (well I'm only 8 months now...) and probably wouldn't be half the man I am today if it wasn't for some of you! Too bad no one ever taught me how to drink from a bowl without spreading water over the entire house!!!
With love & lots of licks! Scottie

Fred (aka Bourbon)

Hello,

We adopted Fred "Bourbon" of Border Collie Brandy's litter in April 2005. He's having a great time living in Edmonton. Although he got a little bigger than we anticipated (he mostly takes after his daddy who was almost definitely an Akita), we have a lot of fun at the dog park, the lake and in the fields. Doggie pic is Fred about a month after we got him. Little Fred is on Fred's 1rst B-Day, he's 120lbs!
Thanks so much for all of your hard work. We tell all of our friends and anyone who is interested about you. Happy Easter, Gillis and Dino

Logan

It's me again. Logan!

I wanted to tell you what I've learned so far. 1: I can sit now (it was hard to learn but my Mommy is stubborn) 2: Don't chase my cat brothers (They get scared and scratch) 3: I can get a bite of chicken if I sit and wait for it and don't try to take it (Mommy's really a softie) 4: Don't chew Mommy's lotion bottle (Mommy has to pick every thing up and put it away before bed or I'll be bad) Don't all Mommies know that if they leave it out, it's fair game? I got a few pictures taken so if you'd like to take one from them and tell every one how much I've learned that would be a howl. Oh, and did you know I howl? Really good too! Mommy just looks at me with wonder in her eyes as to who/what I am and where I came from. I'm gaining weight too and don't look so scrawny any more. Got to go... Mommy's taking me for a ride again today, so wish me/her luck that I get in the car. Take care, Logan

Aris

Hi, I adopted Aris in July of this summer after my 11 year old companion dog Bud passed away. It was pretty traumatic and Aris helped me make the transition easier. Here is a picture of her now (November) in her new home, happy and healthy.

Oakley

Thank you for our "wonderful" dog Oakley.
We love him even though he chews up anything he can! We've moved to a acreage now and he has lots of room to run around. We have to keep a close eye on him somtimes because he almost ran away but he has learned his lesson. He's met some new friends and insists on going to Newts house when we go away but oh well. So thank you again for giving him a second chance.

Jackson

Here is a picture of Jackson at about 5 months of age. We got him at the end of September from Second Chance. He’s now 9 months and 90 pounds and is a very handsome dog. As he was one of the runts of the litter, I’m just wondering how big the other puppies have become and would be interested in hearing of his brothers and sisters (I think there were 11 and they came from the Enoch Reserve). I go onto your website in hopes of seeing some of them, but haven’t yet. He loves everyone, especially pretty young girls, and is a guy’s guy, a man’s man. He has re-landscaped our backyard and enjoys shrubs and small trees. Well, he’ll eat just about anything. He has a very calm temperament, though, and is on the whole very well behaved. He has been a great, if bigger than expected, addition to the family. Thanks so much for the work you do at Second Chance. My boys are happy to finally have a‘real’dog. *Diane

Puck

My name is Puck –I’m named after the trickster in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (sorry, hockey fans). My new family says it suits me just fine. Of course, Mom does get a few strange looks when she shouts my name at the park.

My new family met me at one of the adoption days held at Petsmart. They were fostering other puppies. Mom saw me and immediately new that my Dad was going to love me -she was right. And though they had agreed not to adopt a puppy at this time in their lives-Mom was 9 months pregnant - I stole their hearts.

I could play catch within a few days, walk well on and off leash and followed them both around EVERYWHERE. I even lie on the bathmat while Mom has a shower. But I am a puppy. I love to take shoes, socks and underwear and parade them past you. I love my squeaking toys and anything outside that I think is for chewing…wood from the wood pile, rocks, chewing gum from the playground. My favorite activity is gardening. I’m really talented at digging 3 feet holes in the backyard flower gardens.

But my best toy is the new baby. He is as small as my squeaky toys and makes the same sound. But don’t you worry-I haven’t eaten him yet. I just lick him silly! He seems to like it. I can’t wait until he is bigger and can play. We’re going to be best friends.

P.S. Little Jackson asked me to say “thank you SCARS” for his birthday present (I think he means me!)

Hugo (aka Ridgely)

Guess it is as good a time as any to send an update on Hugo (a.k.a Ridgely), Stella (a.k.a Dotty) too while we are at it.

Stella and Hugo just love each other, as you can see from the photo Hugo is her little shadow and who can blame him, she is still the most gorgeous. Hugo is so handsome, just look at those ears. Hugo is 4
months now and Stella is 10 months and just last weekend had their first trip to Grandma & Grandpa's cabin at the lake. They were crashing through cattails for 6 hours and only paused on occasion to try out their swimming skills...let's just say they need practice.

Hugo will be going for puppy obedience soon and Stella is going to try out flyball! We expect they will excel at both. They are doing wonderfully and love to help with the gardening (eating the flowers) and are always willing to help dig a hole whether asked to or not, usually not!

Thank you again for helping us find our puppies!

Pauline & Rob.

Jasper (aka Monkey)

I wanted to say hi and let you know that I’m doing well! My name was formerly Monkey, but my new name is Jasper (for my mom and dad’s favourite park). I love to run, run, run and jump and climb and fetch, and my mom tells me that we will be going to agility classes in January to try to use up some of my energy! I’m fearless and I LOVE people and other dogs. I have been doing very well with my housetraining and have just graduated from puppy classes. My favourite trick is a “high five!”

I am teething right now, so am a little chompy, but have been very good and haven’t chewed up too many things that I’m not supposed to.

My new best friend’s name is Levi – he is a Golden Lab and is only two weeks older than I am. We like to go to the dog park together and we like to wrestle and play. He is much bigger than I am, but I’m faster!

My mom and dad would like to say thanks to SCARS for rescuing my mom and my brothers and sisters and I. They are so glad they were able to adopt me!

Merry Christmas! Love Jasper

Leyla (aka June)

It's me Leyla (a.k.a. June). I wanted to let you know that I am doing very well and have settled into my new home. I couldn't be happier! I have tons of toys all over the house to play with, and I even have a furry feline sister named Keetsya to chase around. She seems to like me and lets me lick her ears and chase her throughout the house, although she sometimes chases me?! What's up with that??? I have learned to sit, shake a paw and lie down…mind you I will do whatever it takes to get those yummy treats!!! I want to send a big thank you to Aunty Lorraine, who was my Foster Mommy before I found my forever home. I miss her lots but know that I will stay in touch with her. Jamie has also been a big fan of mine, so thank you Jamie for caring about me! My Mommy and Daddy hug and squeeze me lots and tell me that they love me. I think it is a win-win situation for us all. Life couldn't be better! SCARS, thanks for rescuing me when you did. We will all be forever grateful. Keep on saving other lives and take comfort knowing that you are making a difference in this world.

Love and gratitude,
Leyla and the Family

Snoop (aka Chi Chi)

I am the happy owner of one of your dogs. She is the best thing that ever happened to our family. I just wanted to let you know my feelings on your trip to Pet Smart on the west end of Edmonton. It seemed to me a huge success (of course I am on the outside looking in) and I would encourage you to do more of it, to get more of those poor animals a good home. Good luck to you all and I greatly admire what you are doing.

Chance (aka Cicero)

I wanted to write to you so I could fill you in on all the new exciting things that have been happening in my life, and to thank you once again for taking such great care of me and making my stay with you so enjoyable.

I love my new home and family, especially my big brother Codin. Even though he may not show it all the time, I know he loves me to pieces and he takes very good care of me. He has taught me lots of new tricks, like how to catch a ball and bring it back, how to shake a paw, and how to eat snow.

I also love my grandparents; they treat me so well (I’m a very spoiled boy.) My grandpa likes to feed me pieces of bacon when he thinks grandma isn’t looking, and grandma always has something for me to play with. I love going for walks with my grandpa, we always have fun splashing in puddles and making a big mess.

On Monday I had my first bath; it was not as fun as Bryn promised me it would be, but my aunty Berde from Denmark made sure I got dried off good, and then she even let me fall asleep with her on the fancy leather furniture. She spoils me so much; she even bought me a fancy bed to sleep in with a beautiful sheep’s skin. It keeps me very warm.

I’m sure you’ll be happy to know that I am growing like a weed; I’ve gained four pounds since I moved in with my new family. I hope you’re all doing well without me. *Chance
P.S. I have had my 1st set of shots and was NOT impressed. My people tell everybody I am a “Drama Queen”!

Tia (aka Mariah)

Thank you so much again for allowing me to adopt Tia (aka Mariah – Scout and Phoenix’s sister). She is healthy and doing very well. She is learning lots and loves attention. Everyone is amazed about how cute she is and how smart she is – looks and brains. I can’t go for a run without at least 5 people stopping me to ask about her and pet her. Anyways, here are some pictures of her. Picture015 was taken on the day we picked her up and the other 3 were taken just today – she likes to smile with her tongue hanging out - hahaha. I hope you like the pictures.

Thanks so much again, she is such a wonderful puppy. She brings smiles to everyone she meets! Jennifer

Malcolm (aka Collar)

Here is a little update on our beloved Malcolm (aka Collar). He started 2 weeks ago an attempt on playing which in his case means rolling in the grass, running around like the wind and plopping on hisback with all four up in the air. It's absolutely hilarious!!!!! He also started to sing.... whenever we squeak his plush toy he lays his head back andhowls......... Everyone we meet on our walks comes up to us and asks about him. They think is is soooo adorable. You guys just wait a little and we will look for a companion for our little wuffel.

Love, Manuela and Markus

Hunter

HI my name is Hunter. I have been in my new home now for about a week. Boy oh boy have I been busy! I didn't like my first car ride too much, I got sick. I think it was cuz I missed my brothers and sisters and especially mom, Nicky.

I just want you all to know I am doing great! I love it here. We go for long walks every night. There is this really cool lake by my house that I love to jump into... I think I scared my new mommy when I did it the first time. I love the water so much that I try to jump in the shower. I had to have my first bath when I got home cuz I got dirty after I got sick, so I dunno what the big deal is!
I have learnt how to sit pretty for treats and starting to ask to go outside for pee and poop breaks. I am still not too sure what to think of the big backyard. I like to have company out there and let my new mom and dad know when I have had enough.... I think the neighbours hear me too...oh well. I have lots of new toys and we play with them so much that I just get plain tuckered out!! Mom lets me curl up with her on the couch and we have some snuggle time before bed. I have my own bed that I sleep in and I could sleep all night if it wasn't for those darn pee breaks. Dad says I am doing REALLY good sleeping in my own BIG BOY bed... he says it's cuz mom hogs most of the bed already anyway.
They have taken lots of pictures of me. I have been to visit some new friends both people (big and little) and other four legged ones, we get along GREAT! More love for me! I also like playing with LUCKY... He is a golden lab/husky cross that comes to visit lots. I guess he is friends with my new family.
The vet says I am going to be a big boy, I already weight 13 1/2 lbs and am 14" tall @ 9 1/2 weeks old.
I gotta go cuz it is almost time for my walk.
I want to say hi to my mom and my brothers and sisters.....I miss you. I hope you are as happy as I am. Maybe we will run into each other some day!
And one more thing....a HUGE thank you to Maria for taking such good care of me, I miss you and won't forget you. Maybe you can visit, I'll check with mom first so she can clean up my toys for company.
LOVE and kisses,
HUNTER....oh yeah and Melissa and Todd say HI too.

Sly

It has been about three months since we adopted Sly from Jan. I just wanted to email another update and let you know how he is doing…aside from tearing everything he can get into his mouth apart, he is wonderful. We moved out to an acreage so he has a companion and lots of room to run and play. (which he absolutely loves, especially when he escapes) He has grown a bit since we got him, but still a little teddy bear. He did have a bit of a run in with a porcupine, but luckily he only got one quill (through the tongue somehow) We had the vet fix him up right away though. Everyone we've come across absolutely adores him.
Again thank you.
