About SCARS

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) is dedicated to reducing the number of homeless animals in Northern Alberta, Canada

We believe that there is a suitable home for all homeless animals: young or old; large or small.

As a volunteer-run, registered charity, we care for these animals by providing veterinary care and foster homes for animals in need until a permanent home is found. These private foster homes provide the animals with warm shelter, food, exercise, and tender loving care (something that so many of the animals we receive have never experienced).

SCARS does not practice selective intake procedures and operates in a triage manner: taking the animal in most medical need first. As a result our medical expenses are enormous. Please consider donating to our rescue efforts.

Look At Us Now!

To date, SCARS has rescued and rehomed over 3,000 animals.

Because these animals live in our homes, we deveop a very deep bond with our fosters. Many of the adoptive families keep us updated on how well their new companions are thriving in their new homes.

To all the wonderful foster homes, all the tireless volunteers, all the compassionate furever-homes: we say a heartfelt thank-you!

Please support your local rescue society and consider adoption as opposed to buying your new friend.

Loki

Alison and Keith are Loki's new parents! We wanted to let you know that he is doing very well in our home. He has so much fun running around in the snow in our backyard and goes for lots of walks! He loves chasing the Frisbee in the back yard too. We got him a toy that is a beehive with squeaky bees in it and he really enjoys taking them out and playing with them! Loki is doing very well with our attempts at training, but we have decided that it would be good for all three of us to start puppy training at parkland kennels on March 18th! Keith and I are excited to know the proper ways to get Loki to understand us. We are in the process of switching his food to the one you recommended, Orijen, it seems to be going well so far! Loki is such a good puppy, he loves belly rubs and is even getting along with Kitty and Arthur (the ferret). Hope all is well with you, please feel free to phone or email us anytime!! Thanks again for this wonderful opportunity, Loki has added so much happiness to our lives!!
Thank You!! Alison, Keith, Loki, Kitty, and Arthur!

Shyla

Hello! I just had to write and tell SCARS how absolutely thrilled we are with Shyla!! My husband and I absolutely adore her - and she is soooo well behaved and affectionate! She has no trouble telling our big rowdy Australian Shepherd who's the new boss, and it's hilarious to watch them play and trade rawhide bones and toys all the time! Our cats like her as well, and share the couches with her! Thank you so much for the time and effort SCARS puts into the rescued animals, and we are so happy we are able to give Shyla her forever home!

Sincerely,
Crystal and Keith

Benny

Hi! It's Benny!

I have been with my new family for 1 month now and I am loving it! I get to wake everyone up with great big kisses every morning and then I get a good belly rub! I love my new backyard and I have so much fun running laps around it. There are lots of cool places to explore and everyday is a new adventure.

My favorite time of the day is when I get to go on long walks and if I am really lucky there will be lots of deep snow for me to jump around in. I just wanted to say hello to all my old friends and let everyone know that I am doing great!

Kisses Benny (AKA Big Ben!)

Hi From Christine and Jarrod!

We adopted Benny at this year's Pet Expo in Edmonton just over a month ago.

We have enjoyed each and every day with him. Over the past month Benny's true personality has come out and he has provided us with numerous moments of laughter and lots of kisses!! He loves having his chin scratched as well as his belly. Benny is a very well behaved boy and where ever he goes everyone comments on how handsome he is. We just wanted to let you know that things are going great and we couldn't have asked for a better dog.

Thank you so much to your organization and for introducing us to Benny.

Hunter

Hi my name is Hunter, I was one on Nicky’s puppies. The picture on the left is one from when I was adopted back in April 06 and came home with Melissa and Todd. Things here are great and as you can see I have really grown up but I still love to play. I have lots of toys that I like to chew on, play catch with and tug of war. The best is seeing just how many I can pick up at once to bring and drop in Todd’s lap. Sometimes I leave my toys out after playing with them my Mom and Dad step on them. They make funny noises and I just smile back with my cute smile and big brown eyes, then I am irritable. I also love meeting new people especially kids. They are just the right size small like me. I am very quiet but I love to bark at the vacuum and lawn mower. I love to run and when the first snow came well I didn’t know what to think of that stuff but now WOOOHOOO! Now I run around the backyard and roll around in the snow. I love jumping in the really fluffy snow and try to bury myself in it. Then just when it seems like I am having lots of fun in the snow, out comes the shovel. I try and try to jump on it to stop the snow, it is kind of a fun game. Bark at the shovel, jump on the shovel, get in the snow pile and get showered in snow
I found that I really like to take baths as well. Sometimes when my Mom runs the bath for herself I run and jump in cause I think it’s for me. Mom says that when it gets hot outside again she will take me swimming in a REALLY big bath tub. I really like going for car rides. I guess I am an all around loveable guy. I even figured out this whole giving hugs and kisses thing. Stand up and put your front paws on someone’s shoulders then gently nuzzle your nose on their neck.
I have thought about my brothers and sisters and hope they are all as happy as me. Soon it will be our 1st Birthday!!! Happy Birthday March 8th!
