About SCARS

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) is dedicated to reducing the number of homeless animals in Northern Alberta, Canada

We believe that there is a suitable home for all homeless animals: young or old; large or small.

As a volunteer-run, registered charity, we care for these animals by providing veterinary care and foster homes for animals in need until a permanent home is found. These private foster homes provide the animals with warm shelter, food, exercise, and tender loving care (something that so many of the animals we receive have never experienced).

SCARS does not practice selective intake procedures and operates in a triage manner: taking the animal in most medical need first. As a result our medical expenses are enormous. Please consider donating to our rescue efforts.

Look At Us Now!

To date, SCARS has rescued and rehomed over 3,000 animals.

Because these animals live in our homes, we deveop a very deep bond with our fosters. Many of the adoptive families keep us updated on how well their new companions are thriving in their new homes.

To all the wonderful foster homes, all the tireless volunteers, all the compassionate furever-homes: we say a heartfelt thank-you!

Please support your local rescue society and consider adoption as opposed to buying your new friend.

Keeta (AKA Nakita) and Garner

Hi there!

This is Keeta (A.K.A. Nakita) and Garner here! We were adopted by our new mum and dad (Lesley and Jesse from Calgary) from you guys about 5 months ago when we used to live with Silvia. Could you please pass this email on to her. We just wanted to catch her up on what has been happening for us in our new home!!!

We really love our new home and our parents sure love us a bunch; however, it was a bit of an adjustment period when we first moved in! I (Garner) was a pretty nervous guy and got really scared of a lot of things, my nickname even became "Mr. Worries" because I worried so much and was always very tense with a really tight belly!!! I did not really like going to the dog park much as all those other crazy dogs got me pretty worried! Keeta on the other hand, loves the dog park and is always looking to play with whoever is around!

Soon, after we got settled in in our new home, Keeta really started acting strange and it was soon discovered that she was a "resource guarder" and did not want anyone to go near her toys or anything else she thought should be hers. She even bit our mum twice on the hand and growled and made her feel really scared.

Our mum and dad cared about us a lot though and wanted to do whatever they could to help me with my worries and Keeta with her guarding and aggression. We had a visit from a really nice trainer who came right to our house. She helped a lot on that first visit and mum and dad felt a lot better. The trainer liked us so much that she decided to make me and Keeta her "case study dogs" for some training she was doing and we got to do a 9 week- intensive training for FREE! My parents have learnt a lot about us and we're really doing a good job of listening and getting along together. I think the best thing that my parents learnt about was the "Tellington Therapeutic touch" which Keeta and I both really love.

It has really done an amazing job of getting rid of a lot of my worries! I am less tense, more confident and just feel better about myself overall. I even like to go to the park and have started to play with some of the other dogs!!! My parents say that I am such a loyal guy, I always stay close and try really hard to listen and do things to make my parents proud. I also learnt a lot of manners at my dog school class- I was the top student!

Keeta is doing way better and is much more respectful to our parents. No bites, not many growls, and is even giving her toys to them when they ask for them!!! She loves the t-touch too and lets mum touch her where she needs to when she was not even aloud to touch her paws before!!!

Keeta and I like to play together and once in a while will even do a little snuggling together! Our favorite is going out to the mountains with mum and dad...we can be off leash in the mountains as we stay close to mum and dad. We also love to go back-country skiing with dad...I love to try to catch his skis!!!! I think we have really brought lots of happiness to mum and dad's life and they have brought lots to ours! We are a great little family and look out for each other.

I hope that all is going well with you and all your pup-friends. Thank you so much for taking care of us and keeping us safe, it's so nice to see that you are still looking after other pups that need your help.

ps- thanks for the calendar you sent.....Boy....do I ever look handsome on that cover!!!!
wet nose kisses and licks!

Keeta and Garner

Gracie (aka Nana)

I wanted to update AGAIN how well Gracie is doing. She definitely has the Basset in her as she loves to howl when we sing! She certainly has her own voice and makes sure you know exactly how she feels about things. She has a cat brother named Reilly whom she would dearly love to play with but who has decided he can't be bothered with these dog things. And she has a big brother named Buster (in picture) who she torments endlessly. She has been a test of his patience has she runs alongside him ,nipping at his ears. But he loves her so much and washes her face each morning. He's very protective at the off-leash and at the slightest sign that she might be in over her head, Buster runs over to "save" his princess. I am so grateful to SCARS for giving her a second chance. We just love her to bits.

January 2, 2007

Just a few pics to show you what a little gem you guys helped create.

Gracie(Nanna) and I spend every waking moment together and the favorite part of both our days is the half hour walk we take at 6 in the morning. I know she is a special little monkey if she can manage to have me awake at that time and NOT be grumpy!! More and more of goofiness comes out everyday and we sometimes refer to her as "graceless Gracie" as she is terribly clumsy. But she makes me smile and even Reilly, the cat, has determined she is hardly a threat and will allow us all to sleep together in peace. The look of horror on his face when he woke up cuddled up to Gracie instead of me was priceless. Thanks again for this little bundle of joy and laughs!!

Feel free to post pics and letter. Everyone should be so lucky to have a Gracie!

Echo

Hi There,

I am sending an update on Echo. I sent a pic. of her last year to be put in your Look at us now. It as been a year since we got Echo and she has taken over our yard, house and our hearts. She is the most affectionate, lovable and obedient ( except for going after a deer once) dog we have ever had. We love her to bits. I have heard from a few people that have got dogs from scars that they to are very happy with there pets. Thank-you scars...
Yours truly.. Phil

September 6, 2006

I thought I would give you a quick update on Echo. We have had her for 3 months now. For starters we all LOVE her to pieces. She is a very easygoing dog. She is great with other dogs we meet on our walks. ( very easy going ) Oh and she LOVES walks and rides in the truck. I take her with me as much as possible. I do not think Echo has a mean bone in her body. Getting Echo was the best thing we did. She is a very obedient dog. I could not ask for more.
Thanks S.C.A.R.S.
Yours Truly Phil....

June, 2006

Just thought I would let you know that so far Echo is doing great. She is a VERY good dog so far. It will be three weeks this Tusday that we had her. All I can say is she's a doll. She listens real well and follows basic commands. The only time she go's to the bathroom is when we take her for walks. I think she only went twice in the yard. Between me and my daughter she is getting spoilt.Anyway I just thought I would tell you a bit about how Echo was doing... Yours Truly.. Phil

Sierra

Hi Jamie and Foster Parent Olivia,

Sierra is doing beautifully! She is very happy and loved. She is extremely smart and we have started training. She loves her walks and loves to play fetch. Her and our little shitsu terrypoo, Abby, are the best of friends, and they will even share a food bowl now. She truly is a member of our family and we just wanted to thank you for her, and your support and guidance when we had questions or concerns. We are looking at agility training for her as she is extremely smart and can jump crazy heights. She also loves spending time with us, and that is some great one on one time. Our 18 month old daughter can say her name beautifully, and in fact it was one of her first words. The girls really enjoy her.
Thanks again,
Jenni, Khery, Brieanna, Indigo and her best pal Abby

Millie

Hello!

It is getting close to a year since I have been adopted and I am having a great time with my new family. I live with my Mom and Dad and I even have a little black pug for a sister.

A lot has happened in the last year. My Mom and Dad got married just as soon as I was adopted and we moved to Calgary. I love it here.

I am getting quite big. I weigh 58lbs. I like to play ball in the back yard and go for long walks. I keep asking Dad to take me for a bike ride but he doesn't think that my brakes work that well yet.

I am curious to see how my siblings are doing...Maggie, Rocky, and all of the others. I hope that they are as happy as me.

Love,

Mille Taylor

P.s. I have enclosed a picture of myself so you can see how great I look. XOXOX

Akira (AKA Sawyer)

Hi! My name is Ktista. My husband and I adopted Akira from your organization just over 2 years ago. At that time he was known as Sawyer. He is a Ridgeback cross, we believe he is mixed with Husky,as he displays a lot of physical and behavioral characteristics of a husky. Akira's mom and sister were also from your organization. I remember his mother was Onyx and his sister was Sassy.

Akira is a great dog! He is a big sweetheart, and he loves to cuddle and kiss. He is madly in love with our 4 month old daughter. He will not stop kissing her, and every time she cries, he runs into the room to check on her. He sleeps beside her all the time too. He is so loyal, and he is very very protective of our family, especially me and Kalle, our baby girl. He is either following me around the house where ever I go, or he is laying beside Kalle. He is such a fantastic dog for our family.

Gilligan & Precilla

May 15, 2007

Hi everyone! Gilligan here. I’ve been with my mom and my Aunt Neenee for over a year now and I could not be happier. My mom likes to take me and Precilla for long walks on the off-leash trails and we love it! I make friends with almost all of the dogs we meet except for this pack of Newfies that I’m terrified of; those things look like bears!! My leg is doing great although every once in a while I get a little too crazy (I’m a fun-loving guy) and it gets sore for a while and then I turn into a “hop-along”. But I’m a tough boy and my mom keeps Metacam on hand just in case! I am a 93-pound mama’s boy and one of my most favorite things to do is ‘nuggle with my mom and let her give me big hugs. I was very happy that my mom and Neenee adopted my girlfriend Precilla. It’s nice to have a friend although I think she is more attached to me than I am to her—just don’t tell her I said that. Haha.

Hey. It’s me, Precilla. My mom and Neenee adopted me in November so I’ve been part of the “zoo” for almost 6 months now. I looooove my boyfriend Gilligan. It was love at first sight. I can’t get enough of him!! When we went to school at Dogspaw everyone kept laughing at how I would maul Gilligan with kisses and paws after being away from him for just a few minutes. My mom is trying to get me to be a little more independent by walking me alone. She says it is working but one time I slipped out of my collar and there was no way I was going to let Mom get within 3 feet of me; no siree! So, Neenee had to bring Gilligan in the car to where we were so that Mom could put the collar and leash back on me. Haha that sure gave Mom a run for her money. She said it was a good thing we weren’t by cars. I am still a little shy with people—those things can be pretty scary. But I have gotten much better! I am not a “melter” anymore when I get scared. My mom and Neenee think that the reason I used to be SO scared was because I was in pain. It turned out that I had some rotten teeth that had to be removed. Right after the surgery I was already a braver, happier girl. I am so happy to be in my forever home with my mom, Neenee and the kitties.

Riddick

Hello!!

We just wanted to give you an update on Riddick, the Australian Shepherd Cross that we picked up from Athabasca in September/October of 2006 (I think that’s when we got him).

He has finally settled in with his sister Monday. We changed his name to Mimic as soon as we got him – it sounded similar and was just to help him realize he had a new beginning. (also, because he “mimicked” everything Monday did until he took obedience classes with us and finally understood more commands) Monday and Mimic are inseparable now and so happy together. It took him a long time to get over his broken heart and has only just recently actually started to get his self-confidence back and play with enthusiasm.

We have gone rollerblading this spring and although Monday is a wolfhound cross – and has longer legs…. Mimic can go 4 kilometers rollerblading and STILL be pulling his slow-mo Mom behind him. Monday just lopes behind at that point. What an energetic puppy!!

He is so cuddly and loving. He wants nothing more than cuddles and to be near us all the time. We will be moving to Montreal in August for a year and the WHOLE family is moving together. Mimic’s little brother Chase (white cat) is quite happy with the new addition to the family too. Chase and Monday did not get along until Mimic came along! He is the glue that made them all happy together! J Now we are one big happy family and everyone is settled in.

We’ve attached some pictures of the inseparable duo of destruction. J

Luv Tanya, Scott & family.

Colby (aka Sulton)

This is Colby (aka Sulton). After a year of trying to convince my husband, Zan, that we should get another dog so that Brady would have some company, he finally agreed. We had my sister's dog for 2 weeks and we saw how happy Brady was to have another dog around so we decided that it was time to look at getting another dog. We thought about getting a pure-bred German Shepherd puppy and we also thought of the SPCA and SCARS. We adopted Brady from the SPCA back in Feb. 2005 and we were very lucky to have found such a great dog, and so we thought we would look at rescuing another puppy.
I had a couple of dogs picked out and went to PetSmart SCARS Adoption Day to see a couple of them and felt that I had connected the most with Colby (formerly Sulton). I was nervous because I wasn't sure how Brady would feel about a puppy, and if he would be angry at us for getting one.
The first few days we were convinced that Colby didn't have a personality. But as the days went by, his little personality started coming out in a very big way. The very first time I had to leave Colby through the day to go to work, I wasn't sure what to do at first. So I decided that the bathroom would be the best idea. We put some toys and some water down for him and put up a coffee table against the door and left the door open in case Brady wanted to come down for a visit. When my husband got home for work that day, he was greeted by two very happy dogs. He checked the house for damage, but everything was in place. We were very surprised and pleased that our house was in one piece. Somehow the "Escape artist" got out, probably through a crack that he pushed open.
Then we started leaving the two dogs outside through the day in our fenced yard. It was in the evening and Colby was outside so I thought I would go and check on him to make sure he wasn't getting into trouble. He was nowhere to be found. He managed to get himself out of a small hole under the fence that we didn't see because it was covered up by a lilac bush. Brady and I ran around the neighbourhood calling him and I thought for sure he was gone. About 15 minutes had gone by and out of nowhere there comes Colby. Zan decided after that he needed to board up a few spots around the fence. He has tried to escape since. We have had Colby now for about 5 months and he has grown to be such an important part of our family. His personality fits in so well with all of ours. He loves the water, he loves car rides and he has even survived a 9 hour car ride to Vernon, BC. He loves the outdoors, and he loves his family. We are very happy with our decision to get another puppy. *April

Holly (Sookie)

Meet one of our SCARS dogs, Holly. Holly came to us in March 2007, after a very unsettled life. She was found with her puppies in Northern Alberta after being dumped in the bush. The girls at PARS rescued her at just over a year old. Someone adopted Holly from High Prairie and moved her to Edmonton. The adoption didn't work for some reason and Holly was surrendered to SCARS. We had been checking the website for a border collie cross, and Holly (then Sookie) caught our eye. When we brought her home, I didn't know what to expect. I certainly didn't expect to find her sitting in the middle of the kitchen table in the middle of the night, howling! That only happened the first night and I have no idea what got into her. She is still a little shy with men unless they ignore her. The harder a guy tries to make friends, the more suspicious Holly becomes. For some strange reason, Holly bonded with my husband right from the start, she never made strange and prefers his company to mine. That was a relief after her history of shyness. Holly is a typical border collie, energetic and sensitive. A raised voice leaves her cringing. So no raised voices! We love her to bits and are glad to have been able to give her a good home.

Crispin

Crispin Spirit says hi to everyone!

On April 24th, it will be three years since my guardian angels at SCARS came to my rescue. A very special thanks to Jan for coming to get me that cold, windy night. Thank God because I was in pretty rough shape from the porcupine quills, not to mention starving to death, literally!

Life is good. I have a sister now as well. We fostered Cammy for a year and then adopted her. She is a great little sister and sure has come a long way since we brought her home. She was shy and pretty scared of people but I told her that my mom would take real good care of her and nobody would ever harm her. She has become daddy's girl, she even lies on the sofa with him every evening to watch TV - that's okay because I am mom's big girl! Sometimes I try to sit on her lap, but her legs are a bit small for my bum.

We go for a walk every morning and just love it. Sometimes Cammy tries to run into the trees foraging for food - old habits die hard. Mom says I am a good girl because I stay close to her side. Besides why would I want to go anywhere - I've hit the good life! Two meals a day, fresh water, nice "dog" house - my people live in it too! We haven't spent a night outside since we came here and do not expect to again! My coat gets brushed and is no longer dirty or matted like it used to be. Just the way it should be for puppies, right?

Our mom and dad take us everywhere with them, we even get to stay in hotels, even Cammy is okay with this. She loves car rides, the moment she hears the 'keys' she is at the door.

Gotta go, our mom is real busy but she promised she would send this update to you. We have enclosed a picture of Cammy as well. It is raining outside today so mom could not get a new one of the two of us together.

Looking forward to seeing you at Tails on the Trails…

Love, hugs and big sloppy kisses

Arlo

I turned one year old today. I still live a few houses down from my mom and get to visit her occasionally. I love going to the dog park with my dog friends and I love to hang out with my family. The boys can be a little rambunctious sometimes, but so can I. I really love bugging my cats Ruby and Spalding. I think they are finally getting used to having me around.I've enclosed a picture.

Take care,
Arlo Blondie Walter and family

Loki

Alison and Keith are Loki's new parents! We wanted to let you know that he is doing very well in our home. He has so much fun running around in the snow in our backyard and goes for lots of walks! He loves chasing the Frisbee in the back yard too. We got him a toy that is a beehive with squeaky bees in it and he really enjoys taking them out and playing with them! Loki is doing very well with our attempts at training, but we have decided that it would be good for all three of us to start puppy training at parkland kennels on March 18th! Keith and I are excited to know the proper ways to get Loki to understand us. We are in the process of switching his food to the one you recommended, Orijen, it seems to be going well so far! Loki is such a good puppy, he loves belly rubs and is even getting along with Kitty and Arthur (the ferret). Hope all is well with you, please feel free to phone or email us anytime!! Thanks again for this wonderful opportunity, Loki has added so much happiness to our lives!!
Thank You!! Alison, Keith, Loki, Kitty, and Arthur!

Shyla

Hello! I just had to write and tell SCARS how absolutely thrilled we are with Shyla!! My husband and I absolutely adore her - and she is soooo well behaved and affectionate! She has no trouble telling our big rowdy Australian Shepherd who's the new boss, and it's hilarious to watch them play and trade rawhide bones and toys all the time! Our cats like her as well, and share the couches with her! Thank you so much for the time and effort SCARS puts into the rescued animals, and we are so happy we are able to give Shyla her forever home!

Sincerely,
Crystal and Keith

Benny

Hi! It's Benny!

I have been with my new family for 1 month now and I am loving it! I get to wake everyone up with great big kisses every morning and then I get a good belly rub! I love my new backyard and I have so much fun running laps around it. There are lots of cool places to explore and everyday is a new adventure.

My favorite time of the day is when I get to go on long walks and if I am really lucky there will be lots of deep snow for me to jump around in. I just wanted to say hello to all my old friends and let everyone know that I am doing great!

Kisses Benny (AKA Big Ben!)

Hi From Christine and Jarrod!

We adopted Benny at this year's Pet Expo in Edmonton just over a month ago.

We have enjoyed each and every day with him. Over the past month Benny's true personality has come out and he has provided us with numerous moments of laughter and lots of kisses!! He loves having his chin scratched as well as his belly. Benny is a very well behaved boy and where ever he goes everyone comments on how handsome he is. We just wanted to let you know that things are going great and we couldn't have asked for a better dog.

Thank you so much to your organization and for introducing us to Benny.

Hunter

Hi my name is Hunter, I was one on Nicky’s puppies. The picture on the left is one from when I was adopted back in April 06 and came home with Melissa and Todd. Things here are great and as you can see I have really grown up but I still love to play. I have lots of toys that I like to chew on, play catch with and tug of war. The best is seeing just how many I can pick up at once to bring and drop in Todd’s lap. Sometimes I leave my toys out after playing with them my Mom and Dad step on them. They make funny noises and I just smile back with my cute smile and big brown eyes, then I am irritable. I also love meeting new people especially kids. They are just the right size small like me. I am very quiet but I love to bark at the vacuum and lawn mower. I love to run and when the first snow came well I didn’t know what to think of that stuff but now WOOOHOOO! Now I run around the backyard and roll around in the snow. I love jumping in the really fluffy snow and try to bury myself in it. Then just when it seems like I am having lots of fun in the snow, out comes the shovel. I try and try to jump on it to stop the snow, it is kind of a fun game. Bark at the shovel, jump on the shovel, get in the snow pile and get showered in snow
I found that I really like to take baths as well. Sometimes when my Mom runs the bath for herself I run and jump in cause I think it’s for me. Mom says that when it gets hot outside again she will take me swimming in a REALLY big bath tub. I really like going for car rides. I guess I am an all around loveable guy. I even figured out this whole giving hugs and kisses thing. Stand up and put your front paws on someone’s shoulders then gently nuzzle your nose on their neck.
I have thought about my brothers and sisters and hope they are all as happy as me. Soon it will be our 1st Birthday!!! Happy Birthday March 8th!

Lexi (aka Smudge)

We just wanted to give you all an update on Smudge, now Lexi. We adopted her on June 3/06 at 3 months of age, or so we think. She is doing absolutely wonderful. When we first brought Lexi home we did have a few issues, but with the help of Lori Holt and Go Boldly, she is turning into an awesome dog. Lexi is now 10 months old, and her vet Dr Meger, has given her a clean bill of health. She has been all over the province. This past summer at only 4 months of age she went on an 8 hour hike, 2300 feet in elevation. By the end of the day she was our group's mascot. A very tired mascot, but a mascot none the same!! :)
Lexi absolutely adores people. Every time she goes to the dog park, it's not the dogs that she wants to meet, it's their people. If you ever go to the dog park and a little brindle coloured dog pokes her head up at you, it's likely to be Lexi. Mind you, she is great with other dogs and cats (as can be seen by the picture) she just prefers humans. When she does decide to play with other dogs, she loves to have them chase her. Of course, they never can catch her. She's a fast one!! I guess it's the greyhound in her. She always seems to need to be in charge as well with the other dogs. If there's a lot of horsing around, then she barks and barks until everyone settles down. Her big brother Walter (the cat) has adjusted and they are fast becoming best friends.
We've attached some pictures of her that we would love for you to include in your website. She's pretty hard to see because of her colouring.
We must admit that it has taken a lot of time and effort for Lexi to become the dog that she is slowly turning into. But we both agree, it was well worth it.
Thanks SCARS for such an amazing addition to our family.

Rufus

I am sending you a picture of Rufus. As you can see, he is not the timid and filthy critter he was; he's turned out to be a very handsome and goofy 1-1/2 to 2 year old.

He is now neutered and was an angel about not licking. He doesn't try "having his way" with all the other dogs we meet any more, which is nice. He is so good at figuring out what we want and then doing it. We only have to tell him things once or twice and he tries to remember it. He comes when we call him, with ears a-flopping, and our daily walks and trips to the park are really a joy for all of us. We are going to start doggie school at the end of the month. I think he will enjoy it.

He did not know about playing when we got him. Other dogs would try to play with him and he'd just stand there. He also didn't know anything about toys. It has been really wonderful watching him figure it out. He is still awkward with other dogs - he likes them and they like him, but he doesn't know how to interact and he looks quite funny running around in circles while they try to play. He's getting the idea though. Also when we got him, he was really bothered if you tried to touch his collar and when we got out the leash he would run away. Now he hears it jingle on the hook and knows it's a good thing. When we try to put the leash on him, he still lays on his back with his paws curled up so it's hard to get at his collar. But once the leash is on, away we go, with him bouncing and wiggling all over.

He is terrified of the garage and won't have anything to do with the dog house (darn!). We sure do wonder about his "story". If you ever hear anything about where he came from, would you let us know? We can't believe someone is not out looking for this prince of a dog. In the meantime, our "Black Gold Terrier" (we made that up for when people ask!) is a source of huge entertainment and happiness for both of us.

Thanks so much for finding him for us. **Judy and Richard

Julio (aka Jonah)

Season’s Greetings from Julio (AKA Jonah) and Maximus!
We adopted Julio in January 2006, and he has certainly grown up to be a mighty handsome 70 pound guy with a vibrant personality! A little destructive at times (definitely has a wild streak), but compensates well with his endearing charm! He is a very quiet dog who never barks and that goes over well with the neighbors! He has brought many fun and unforgettable moments to our lives… for that we are blessed!
Just wanted to wish you all at SCARS a Very Merry Christmas and thank you for all the work you do!

Annie (aka Jamie)

Hi – Here’re pictures of Annie graduating from her puppy class. She’s doing really well and is a very smart puppy (now young lady dog). She is much greyer than she was as a puppy and kind of brindled like a boxer. She’s beautiful.
She’s a little reserved with strangers but is good with other dogs and is learning more each day. She is a very calm girl (especially considering it looks like she has collie, lab, and boxer (and probably shepherd etc) in her) but loves to play in deep snow. As you know, she is very smart. She knows most of her basic obedience stuff already (sit, down, stay, come, heel).
We’d like to know more about how she was rescued and if you know anything about the rest of her family.
We love her very much. Thank you for all your hard work with these dogs. *Diane

Hello again,Willow met the vet today, and she did fine.... she got her booster shot and loved the attention. All who see her say what a pretty dog she is. Last week we weighed her here at home and she was 50 lbs, today at the vet's she weighed 53.8 lbs. Must be from the good eats and all the relaxing in the warm comforts of home.

Casper

Hope you remember me, I am big and white, lots of fun, and a gentle giant. I really like my new home, I can run and run and run and run for ever, I haven't even made it around the entire place yet cause the snow is so deep.
My new owners are sucks..I give them a look and they give me a treat, and I got this cool new friend named Thor, he's been here awhile, so he gets the best spots to sleep, but I'm ok with that cause I like the cooler spots.
Gotta go, I see a stuffed animal I must destroy.

Hi all, this is Keith and Sue. Casper is doing great, he has fit into our family very well, and is very well behaved. Our other dog and him get along really good, and Casper seems to enjoy having lots of space to run. Although its been cold and lots of snow, he ranges out and and is always the last to come in at night. Its like Casper has always been here, he has fit in so well. We are extremely happy he has joined our family.
Thanks for everything. Some pics of the little fella.

Syren (aka Liberty)

How all is well with you! This is Syren camping at the lake. Thought you would enjoy seeing a couple of up-to-date photos of Syren (aka: Liberty.) She has grown into our family so well! Honestly, there is nowhere in the house that I can go without this little girl following to make sure that I am not far and okay.
She is so protective and loving towards our children and seems to have an innate alarm clock of her very own because she will sit in front of the window waiting; knowing when each of the kids is to arrive home from school.
She has really calmed down from her puppy state following her year of age mark and although can still be an imp, she is such a good girl! Playful, loyal, sweet and beyond any expectations I had ever hoped for.

Here is Syren just in from the "beauty parlour" (looking terribly sorry for herself with the hair bows... she must be a "tom-boy!' LOL)

Have a nice day! **Velvet
P.S. I hope her mama and siblings are doing equally as well.

Monty (aka Joc)

It has been one heck of a summer, but I thought it was about time I gave you an update on my new life. My name at SCARS was Joc, and I was Scotties brother.
In March I was adopted, by my new Mom and Dad and my new BIG brother Oakley (Great Dane), and my two smaller brothers Gimley, and Spud (cats). My new home has been wonderful. I have got a 2 acre play pen that my brother and I love to romp and play in around in all day long (we are inseparable), and I get to snuggle in front of the TV every night. This is only of course when I am not out camping with my whole family, or going to my agility classes (the instructor says I am a born pro!!), or going to baseball games, or long walks at the off leash parks.
Thank you so much to all of the people at SCARS, without you I would have never found my family, and I can't say how much I appreciate all of your hard work and all that you did for me.

Tash

I just wanted to let you know that Tash is doing great!!! She is such a gentle natured dog, the neighbours children love her and she is so well behaved. We adopted her about 7 weeks about and as you can see from the photos, she is a very happy puppy. Having the chance to spend the day with Tash prior to adopting her was a great step. When we brought her home a week later our other puppy was so excited and I would like to thing that they remembered each other. Tash was shy for the first few days but has since settled right in. After the first week, Tash's confidence increased to the point where she was playfully challenging her sister and was teaching her how to swim. The pair of them can get into quite a lot of mischief.
Tash’s health is also improving. After her operation she developed an infection. We got her antibiotics and an E-collar and after she ate the first one (I don't know how) we went back to the vets for another. The next day we came home to find that not only had she escaped from her kennel again, eaten her new E-collar and the remote control. It was at this time we decided to stop buying the collars. Her front legs hadn't really improved, so after a few visits to the vet and some x-rays we have her on metacam. She is a new dog!!! We are still waiting for the results of the x-rays but the vet couldn't find anything immediately wrong.
With 2 nine month old Sheppard/Husky crosses in the house we definetely have our hands full and loving every minute of it. Thank you for looking after Tash until we could find her, she is a great addition to our household. Thanks; Aileen and Scott

Maskwa (aka Dandy)

Sorry it's taken so long for us to get you an update on our new best friend...Maskwa ( Adopted as Dandy-February 18 2006).

He was just what we needed to take our hearts out of the sadness we were feeling. After our best friend (Kumomoto) of almost 10 years passed away from Cancer just after Christmas, we were left with a big hole in our lives!!! She was also a rescued dog and never let us forget how grateful she was for that!!! She was full of life right up until she passed.

Maskwa has become one of the family, he is so full of life and has become quite the handsome young dog! He is such a goofy dog (fits right in with us). We get many compliments on him when we are out for walks, looks as well as his good behavior! He is an outside dog with a pretty nice house and yard. He and our cat (Roo) are becoming friends as well. They greet each other at the back door when we are coming or going, not afraid at all!

We just want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for doing what you do for our friends!!!We couldn't imagine our days and holidays without him! There is something to be said about saving a life by adopting an animal, our lives were saved as well!!!

Thank you again, *Celine, David, Maskwa and Roo

Bree (aka Meg)

You all may remember me as Meg but my new mom has renamed me Brianna (Bree). She picked this name because it means 'Strength'; and after everything that I've gone through :first as a stray with my mom and sisters, then my sisters got sick with parvo, but I managed to stay healthy and then the other pups out at my Foster home got Distemper and yet again a came out ok. Now my doggy mom is sick and has those pesky little things called lice, I was just checked out today and yet again I've come out with a clean bill of health. My mom is going to treat my fur lice just incase though. So I think that my mom picked a fitting name for me, oh it also mean Beautiful -which I soooo am :)

My big brother and mean "BIG" brother (85lbs) and I get along great he even lets me take the toys right out of his mouth, he is a sweet heart but I knowthat if the time came he'd have my back :)

I'm doing really well, am loving my new raw diet and getting bigger and stronger everyday. I have lots of energy that I get to burn off playing catch (ya that's right I've already learned that game) and doing other training like how to walk on leash and the basics like sit, down, come. I can’t wait until I am safe to go to puppy Kindergarten. Don't get me wrong it’s not all work, I also get to have great snuggle sessions with me mom, I have my own bed but mom lets me cuddle with her while she relaxes.

Well that's all for now I will keep you updated on my progress, I've sent a couple pics for you to see how "hard" my life is.

Big thanks to everyone that took care of me while I was waiting for my Forever home ! ! !

Gilligan

Sorry it took so long for me to send these! Gilligan is doing awesome! His "babyfoot" is getting stronger and stronger everyday. We walk everyday and he meets lots of friends at the offleash areas. He's a great dog and I'm sooo proud to be his mom! **Mandi

Honey

We have had Honey with us now a month and she is an amazing girl. We love her to pieces and are very happy to have her as part of our family. She is so smart and has learned so many things very easily.
We had a long trip home from Athabasca but it was a good trip. Honey curled up on one seat and Ella on the other and that is where they stayed all the way home. We stopped in Lloydminster to let the girls out for a walk and a pee and back into their seats they went for the remainder of the trip. There were no complaints from either of them.
Ella is really enjoying having Honey here, not only does she have a playmate but she now has a partner in crime to blame things on. I tell you these two are worse than siblings, lol. We have a rabbit that we got about 3 months ago and it is in it's hutch in the backyard where it drove Ella crazy for the first two months. She tried and tried to get at that rabbit but listened very well when told no. The past month or so she has left it alone. That is until Honey arrived...the first morning here when I put the girls out back Ella ran straight for the rabbit hutch and started barking and of course that brought Honey running. Well it only took about 5 mins and Honey had the wire on the cage broke and her head in the cage. She did not get the rabbit but when I came out and gave them both trouble Ella sat there barking at Honey and looking at me as if to say, "it is all her, not me!" All is well now though with the rabbit. I should of known something was up as soon as I put them out because Ella never barks so when she does you know there is something up.
Ella is use to going everywhere with me and it is very seldom that she gets left at home and when she does she is a very good girl. Honey is now too getting use to coming with me, so when I do have to leave them both behind they have decided this is not acceptable. I don't know who starts but they have both got caught digging holes in my flower garden area out back (no major damage done), and they are getting better with not digging. They spill their water buckets and chew them up, so now its time for steel pails. They chew up anything they can find that is not a toy or bone. When I come home though they both look at me with sad faces, then look at one another as if they are pointing saying; "she did it!" It is very amusing but a mess I can do without. They have only been left alone in the house for short periods of time but have destroyed nothing. Only messes have been outside so that is great. Ella is very well behaved in the house but Honey I wasn't sure on so it has been only very short periods but I feel confident that she would be fine for longer periods now. When I am home her house manners are great. She does try to get at things but takes NO right away and stays away from anything that is not a toy in the house. She learned very well that toys are the only things that she can chew on in the house and boy does she chew them. Like Ella, she rips all the squeakers out of toys, stuffing is gone in no time and the rope toys are shredded into tiny threads, lol. So needless to say they get new toys quite often, lol.
Honey and Ella respect each other and have had no problems adjusting to sharing a house except when Honey tries to sit in Ella's chair. Ella will share food, toys, treats anything ... but NOT her chair. There was a few growls the first couple times Honey tried to sit in the chair now respects that it is Ella's chair. Ella will put up with lots but has made it clear she is the boss and Honey has excepted that. They have learned to share the couch though. This was the common ground that they found. Ella may not share the chair but they found that the couch has enough room for them both. They each have their own beds in my room and they sleep great. When it is bedtime Honey settles right down and goes to sleep and like Ella does not move until I get up in the morning.
Honey is great on a leash for her walks and great at the off leash park. She has gone to my stepsons football game and just lies there with Ella and watches the game. She does not bother anyone nor does she try running around chasing the kids or the ball. She is wonderful with the little kids that have been around here and everyone that has met her just loves her. She thinks she is a little lap dog though. She loves to be cuddled and climbs right up on my lap and will sit there for as long as I will let her. As you will see in the pictures. The pictures were taken on Oct 9th, I was watching the Eskimo game and she decided that I had the best seat in the house and wanted to watch the game with me, she climbed right up on my lap and stayed there for about an hour when she got to heavy for me. Ella gets jealous but now they have learned to share. I sit on the couch with one on each side of me and they put their heads on my lap and they are happy.
Well I guess I have gone on long enough. There is so much that I could write about but I will quit now. All in all Honey is a wonderful well-behaved girl and we love her to pieces and are very happy with our decision to adopt her. She fits right into our family and we cannot imagine what it would be like with out her now.
All the best to everyone at SCARS. Hugs and kisses to all from Honey and Ella. Take care,Alison

Dixi & Anna (aka Dottie & Glory)

Its been a year since we picked Dixi (formerly Dottie) up from St. Albert, and 2 years since we adopted Anna (formerly Glory). Both puppies are doing excellent, other than the odd taste-testing of various objects including the telephone bill. LOL.

Anna is our very vocal but purely harmless guard dog, loudly alerting us to people, critters and wind. The hair on her back stands on ends when she hears something unfamiliar. She loves snooping around, stuffing her mouth with racket balls and lying on her back (a type of doggy yoga). A far cry from being cold and scared under a trailer 2 years ago.
Dixi has been very quiet. We have only heard 3 girly barks this whole year. Maybe she is learning from Anna how to bark – after all she learnt to play like how a dog should including chew toys and balls. Dixi loves to stretch out on the couch with one of us, sometimes on her back with her legs sticking up into the air (another type of doggy yoga). We have also discovered that Dixi loves to dance – when we move to music, she would jump up to move with us.

Both puppies are such a joy to us, entertaining us to no end. We want to convey our thanks and encourage SCARS to continue their wonderful work.

Beau

Just wanted to say hi from the land of the midnight sun, and to let you all know I have settled in well.
I am doing so many new things here, and having a ball! Lucky, my Sister, says in the winter it gets really cold.
My Mom says she will put a coat on me, to keep me warm, and to keep track of me against the snow!
Thanks so much for taking such good care of me until I found my new home
Lots of love, Beau xoxox

Marvin (aka Twister)

Marvin is doing very well. He just got neutered a couple weeks ago but it hasn't slowed him up any! Still into everything....he makes us laugh constantly. He is quite the character. Here are a couple of pictures taken somewhat recently. I'll keep you posted.

Kimby

Just thought I’d give you an update on Kimby. She is doing so well! She walks with her sister Cassie (who came from the Edmonton Humane Society) everyday at the off-leash area in Sherwood Parkand everyone comments on what a sweet, happy puppy she is. You would never know that she had such a rough start in life! Aside from being cute and cuddly, her little quirks are what make her so special: she loves water and will swim wherever she can, including her water dish, the toilet, and puddles (she is usually caked in mud by the time she leaves the off-leash, but fortunately she likes to take baths as well!). It has been trying at times raising two puppies together, but knowing that Kimby and Cassie will have a happy life makes it all worthwhile. And having two puppies to walk and cuddle with is a bonus! Take Care, Jennifer
