Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) is dedicated to reducing the number of homeless animals in Northern Alberta, Canada

We believe that there is a suitable home for all homeless animals: young or old; large or small.

As a volunteer-run, registered charity, we care for these animals by providing veterinary care and foster homes for animals in need until a permanent home is found. These private foster homes provide the animals with warm shelter, food, exercise, and tender loving care (something that so many of the animals we receive have never experienced).

SCARS does not practice selective intake procedures and operates in a triage manner: taking the animal in most medical need first. As a result our medical expenses are enormous. Please consider donating to our rescue efforts.

Look At Us Now!

To date, SCARS has rescued and rehomed over 3,000 animals.

Because these animals live in our homes, we deveop a very deep bond with our fosters. Many of the adoptive families keep us updated on how well their new companions are thriving in their new homes.

To all the wonderful foster homes, all the tireless volunteers, all the compassionate furever-homes: we say a heartfelt thank-you!

Please support your local rescue society and consider adoption as opposed to buying your new friend.

Odie (AKA Roper)

We adopted Odie (formerly Roper) in June/07 and he was one of Brooke's little ones. She had just been rescued from up north and when we found out about her she had just had 8 puppies. My friend Olivia volunteered at SCARS and got me in contact with DOGSPAW where Odie was being fostered. It was love a first sight for us. He was smelly, and dirty from playing with his mates, but he was adorable. He immediately attached himself to Ryan and for someone who never had a dog before--he was sold! We took him home and as our first puppy, it was tough and trying, and he’s certainly given our hardwood “character,” but it’s absolutely worth it.

As soon as he was old enough we brought him to DOGSPAW for Daycare and training. He loves it there! He gets so excited when he sees the staff there he nearly wipes out! He also loves the off leash park and his grandparents where he get to play with their four leggers. In the summer we take him to Lac La Biche where he gets to enjoy many free and adventure filled weekends at the lake.

At near 9 months he's turned out to be the perfect Monkey. In addition to being a chronic "licker,” his personality is just like his mom's and he's a true sweetheart. He loves car rides with his mom and dad and tries (and often succeeds) in riding on my lap in the passenger seat. At 45lbs + this just doesn't seem right, but I usually let him. Odie loves other dogs, people and kids. In fact he loves just about everyone! He is the most submissive dog I've ever known, but we like that about him and wouldn't change who he is for anything.

I just can't imagine Odie growing up where or how he might have. I am so thankful for SCARS at taking such good care of Brooke and her puppies. I know Odie is too.

How was Odie's first bday? we hope he had a blast! Our boys sure did. We celebrated ALL our bdays on the same day. =) I made some liver cake for the boys and made them wear bday hats. =)

Licks & kisses to Odie from his brothers Cain & Abel.

Hi there, I'm Brooke's owner (Roper's mom)! I have three daughters and a husband and two cats. Brooke has been the most wonderful addition to our family and it's nice to see one of her puppies is happy. If the pup is anything like the mom she'll end up being the greatest dog ever. My sister has two show dogs a Great Dane and a German Short Haired Pointer and none of them are near as well behaved as Brooke. Brooke is a people pleasing wonder - she loves her family (especially me though). She also has a licking obsession - she can't stop licking!! But we love it most of the time, just not in the morning when she wakes you up with her wet tongue on either your foot or hand or face asking to be let out. Keep us updated. I'll try and get some good pics of Brooke to post soon.

Odie had a great birthday too! That's funny...we also gave him liver and treats and took him 2 times to the doggy park. Lots of cuddles. Odie is a real cuddler like him mom Brooke. Its funny how lanky they all are. Odie was weighed on his birthday at 54lbs.

Hugs (he actually hugs) from the Odieman.
